What is self-care?

We’ve talked a lot about doing different things for self-care on this blog and self-care is a big focus in all of our events. So we figured it would be a good idea to talk about what self-care really is.

Self-care can become a buzz word lost in bubble baths and treating yourself. But the actual definition of self-care is “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress” (Oxford Dictionaries).

What are the different things you can do that are self-care?

This means anything at all that helps you feel better. Sometimes self-care means making sure you take a shower or drink enough water. It can be exercising or doing yoga as a way to relax and destress or even just making sure that you get enough sleep.

Taking a break for yourself is also a big part of self-care. Whether that means stepping away from your work for 10 minutes every hour or taking a day to yourself to do something relaxing. We all need to take breaks to avoid burnout - we wrote a blog post about that awhile ago too. Burnout can affect everyone if we don’t take the time to take care of ourselves.

Taking care of ourselves looks different for every single person though. But here are some quick tips for ways to figure out what proper self-care means for you.

You can practice self-care by:

Being more compassionate to yourself 

Try being more kind to yourself. Pay attention to your thoughts and practice mindfulness.

Trying to prevent burnout 

Allow time for yourself and remember to take breaks regularly to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Avoiding negative self-talk

We often put ourselves down when we’re struggling but try to remind yourself of the positives and what you can do to work towards what you want.

Practice Intention

Intention has to do with self-care because often taking care of ourselves isn’t the first thing we think of. So, try your best to make sure the things you are doing will help you.

Creating your own self-care routine

You can use these tips to figure out what things help you feel good and what things you can do to help you feel better. It’s different for everyone and different things help different people feel better. So use these tips as a guide to figure out what works well for you.
